Enterprise Award
Inter-Roller Engineering Ltd
Oon Chong Howe, Managing Director,
Inter-Roller Engineering Ltd
GOOD evening Guest-of-Honour, Minister for Transport Mr Raymond Lim,
distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen. I am truly honoured to be here
tonight to receive, on behalf of Inter-Roller Engineering Limited, the
Enterprise Award for 2006. I would like to thank the panel of judges of
bestowing this honour upon us.
From a humble beginning 28 years ago, we have grown to become a global
player. To date, we have an international track record of over 100 airport
projects successfully implemented in more than 25 countries in six continents.
We have indeed planted Singapore's flag of quality and capability through our
projects around the world.
From the start, our founding members - Mr Yap Lem, Mr Low Kok Hua and the
late Mr Chan Chin Wah - pioneered our mission of building a world-class
engineering corporation. They laid the foundation by enshrining the concept of
'meritocracy' from Day One. None of their family members have worked in this
organisation. Building on that foundation, our chairman Mr Lim Yong Wah steered
our vision of becoming a 'living company' with the goal that Inter-Roller will
survive its founders and generations ahead.
Our CEO Mr Lim Yee Min elevated Inter-Roller to new heights (incidentally,
Yee Min is unable to join us here tonight because he is outstation) after our
founder Mr Yap Lem passed the baton to him in 2005.
We are blessed with members of the board, who have steadfastly guided the
company through thick and thin over the years and remain active in ensuring
that we do the right thing. I would also like to thank IE Singapore, EDB, JTC,
our bankers, suppliers, and partners that have worked closely to support and
grow with us.
I would like to specially thank the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore
(CAAS). Mr Ho Beng Huat, deputy director-general, and Mr Benedict Oon, director
of development and engineering of CAAS, are among our distinguished guests here
tonight. These gentlemen demanded that the supplier of baggage handling systems
to the world's best airport must have the best quality products and services.
They gave us the opportunity.
Ladies and gentlemen, having travelled around the world, I do not believe
there is any airport in the world that will get your bags to you in as short a
time. It is through these demands that we are able to bring our CAAS trained
quality to the rest of the world.
Over and above all, I must thank all my colleagues who have contributed in
each of their respective roles. We see our people, my colleagues, as
Inter-Roller. Inter-Roller is not about the logo, nor the building. It is about
our people who share the same values, vision and mission.
Our colleagues each have the resolve and determination to overcome any
unknown obstacles that come their way. They did not know what was ahead of
them, what type of living conditions and cultural shocks they will experience
when they started our projects in Tunisia, Egypt, Curacao, Panama, Myanmar,
Dubai, etc.
Yet, the marketing people went ahead and got the contracts. The mechanical
and electrical teams, designers as well as the software programmers tailored
the solutions. Finance and accounting kept track of our expenditures.
Administrative staff kept everything moving smoothly. Manufacturing built and
our project teams delivered the solutions.
Today, as a small company in this global business, we have carved out a
reputation for ourselves because our team has accomplished all our projects
within the performance targets and deadlines in all the projects that we do.
I salute the fathers and mothers in our company, who often have to spend
long periods of time away from home. When your children need you, you can only
offer comfort through phone or Skype. Singapore is a small country that does
not have Singapore schools in places that we go; yet you sacrificed for us and
contributed in your ways.
I know the distinguished judges and guests here will agree with me that this
Enterprise Award is for you, all my colleagues, who have made the difference.
Thank you.
